Short lived perennial grows with a height of 0.35 to 0.8 meters, rhizomes are short and brown. Leaves are V-shaped, 0.01 to 0.06 m long and 2-6 mm wide, sheath 3-10 cm long, whitish green flushed with brown at base. Anthela compound to decompounded, leafy bracts 3-9 very unequal, spikelets 15-60 clustered in a globose head. Styles pale-brown and ovary yellowish green.
Distributed in tropical America, West Indies and South America, northern Taiwan and south-western regions of India
